Letter from missionary Mun in PNG

Greetings to you from PNG. I hope this letter will find you well and trust you are encouraged in the Lord.

Wow! Surly time is flying. A new day, a new year 2015, and we are already in June. We always wonder what God has for each day, each month and each year; so far, it has been great to trust and depend on Him, while knowing that He holds our future in His hands—He will keep us in His mercy and grace as we keep pressing on our journey.

I see the purple reeds all over the hills in our village. I have learned that the purple colored reeds means it’s June, without checking the calendar. When the wind blows, the reeds move like gentle waves; it calms my heart and makes me feel like experiencing the gentle hand of our Lord. The village people say, “six months of the wet season will be over soon and the dry season is coming over the mountains as the color of the purple reeds change to brown as they become wilted.”  It has been so damp, wet and moldy; nevertheless, we always thank God for the sweet water as He pours down the rain to fill up our water tank.

As we look back over the past days and months, we thank God for His goodness to us—far beyond what we have deserved. May we never presume on His past goodness or forget all His mercies to us, but may they instead lead us to Calvary to remember what He has done for us—always the center of our lives.

Now we have a new day, with new thoughts and minds desiring to share the Gospel of Christ!

Wondering what God has for each one of us this year! Whatever lies ahead, it is great to know that He holds our future in His hands, and He will keep us in His mercy and grace. So, each day is a new gift from God, and His mercy and grace is poured out upon us as we trust and depend on Him. Seong and I came out to NTM HQ from the bush for Seong’s medical checkup. It is a good opportunity, where there is electric power, to send you my letter.

Bible translation:

We thank the Lord for the strength and grace that is ours, moment by moment.

Bible translation isn’t simply a matter of swapping out words. Sometimes words or even concepts don’t exist in another culture and language. Now I am working on NT for BTE (Back Translation in English from the Mihi tribal language for the translation consultants). What a blessing we get, spiritually, through this ministry of translation—benefiting from the depth of the Bible lessons. There is a long way to go, as much translation remains to be done; yet we will joyfully keep pressing on as we serve HIM each day.

Breathlessly, we have run this race to reach this point in translation. We are so grateful to see and hear the Word of God in the Mihi language, and the Mihi people are amazed, and touched to the depths of their hearts, at how they are able to hear the message of God in their own mother language. We are very thankful that God has enabled us to continue on with His work for the Mihi tribal people.

Essential Scriptures in OT and NT for Bible teaching from Creation to Christ are translated in the Mihi language. We thank God for our 20 translation helpers, climbing up the rough mountain to work with us faithfully. It is wonderful to see 15 men read and write (3 men are still working hard to learn, but have a long way to go). 12 men have done a good job of translating on the computer for the first draft of the Bible in their trade language (when the generator runs). I can proudly say that, through many years, their Biblical knowledge has grown, as we patiently taught them the background history of the Bible and church history etc.  At first, through teaching, the men had had the overall picture of creation to Christ—like a puzzle; however, now they know and understand the meaning of the stories that make up the pieces of that big picture puzzle. Now their favorite song is “Amazing Grace” in Mihi, even singing in parts that makes a beautiful harmony.  Two men can play the key board, which runs by batteries, and seven men can play the guitar very well. Oh, I wish you could visit us to see God is at work.

What a privilege to be used as God’s instruments, as He has made us and molded us to serve Him —with Seong’s experience as a computer expert for 18 years and with my experience as a choir conductor for 13 years as well as teaching experience for 18 years..

Literacy is an Essential:

“Literacy is still a key to planting a church. We do more than translate and teach the Bible. We train people to study the Word for themselves. But without being able to read and write, how can they!

Bible translation, literacy classes, Bible teaching and discipleship are all key components to see people in remote places brought to spiritual maturity. Please pray along with us, that as they learn to read, they will be motivated to spend time in God’s Word and desire to be leaders and teachers in upcoming literacy classes. There are many booklets to be printed for each of the learners. Please pray with us for provisions to cover expenses.

Our Plan:

We are thankful for the term that God has given us. It has had many ups and downs but we are thankful for God’s grace through them all. It is hard to believe that we already have served Him for another four years in the bush and it is time for our regular home assignment. Even though we wanted to stay longer for teaching, we must leave the tribal people behind on the last week of September for Seong’s medical checkup in Cairns base hospital; then we will keep moving on for home assignment.

Praise Point:

Thank God for His protection and His healing hand upon Seong—for each new day God gives Seong.

The result of Seong’s medical checkup at NTM’s HQ clinic in Goroka town and the result of the medical checkup brought a good report. The grafted ascending aorta has healed well and the size of the descending aorta is the same size as 3 months ago. It is stable, but if it reaches up to 5cm, he must see the vascular surgeon to be operated on, as suggested by the vascular surgeon in Cairns base hospital. We pray that God holds it safely with no more tearing.

Even though Seong had to lay down on the bed for 2 hours, as they checked Seong thoroughly with the new Ultra machine, Seong was pleased to be helped by the NTM doctor, nurses and a young man who came to the PNG NTM clinic from the USA for his doctor’s training study.

The memory of Seong’s painful and fearful operation for thoracic ascending aorta in 2013 and for triple A in 2003 turned in to thankful hearts, overflowing, for each new day God gives him.

Prayer points:

We sure appreciate your prayers!

  1. Our need of God’s presence and His guidance as we face the future.  Please pray with us for God to meet our needs.

  1. For traveling to Cairns base hospital, Korea and USA, if God leads; for each of our steps as we prepare to leave the Mihi tribe in Sept for our 1one-year home assignment.

  1. For meeting house. Our open meeting hut is made of wild grasses and a bamboo floor, but grass roofing is getting old and leaks badly. It is time to build a permanent house with tin roofing and a plywood floor for teaching Bible lessons. Pray with us for the building materials and transport by airplanes to the bush from town.

  1. For Seong’s health.

  1. For teaching Bible lessons from Creation to Christ.

  1. For good condition of the Kora airstrip in our village.

The airstrip has been officially closed for three months because the NTM pilot has faced dangerous situations while landing on the airstrip when suddenly the village wild boars came up on the strip from the jungle. We have encouraged the village people to change their thinking and method of raising their pigs for many years, teaching them how to make pig pens, but it isn’t easy for them to change.  Since they let the wild boars dig the ground with their long muzzles in the jungle to find food (it is difficult to feed the pigs with the lack of food for the people themselves), the boars dig up the airstrip too. So, for temporary use, Seong bought wire to make a fence using bush posts to go around the airstrip; however, it the bush post become rotten, the village people will take them to their huts to use for their fire wood instead of fixing them. The cost of steel posts to build the fence is SO huge.

Our prayer is that God touches the hearts of faithful people to help us to make a permanent fence with steel posts, cemented into the ground, with special wires all around on the airstrip. This problem has been an ongoing heavy issue and burden on us during the last 15 years. If our airstrip is closed by an NTM pilot again, with a stern warning, we must use an NTM helicopter, which is very costly.  Now, we use the NTM 206 Cessna, the small plane, but, thankfully, we were told that God has provided 3 airplanes (they call “Kodiak”) for the PNG mission field. It will be brought to PNG in July.

Thank you:

We deeply appreciate your part in reaching out to the Mihi tribal people and for your prayers for us. There is no way we could be in PNG without your love and care. Our prayer is to keep resting in Him; we are excited to see how God saves the lost people here in the remote and isolated place in PNG.  We trust He gives us the strength and the wisdom we will need to meet its challenges.

We are excited about the coming weeks and months and want to ask you to please pray for the teaching of the Creation to Christ lessons. Please pray that God’s Word will be understood clearly and that through the work of the Holy Spirit the people will come to know and believe that they are sinners in need of our Savior Jesus Christ alone for their salvation.
